Even though the Mighty Elks of Elk Rapids out scored the Blazers JV boys basketball team, 22-12 in the 4th quarter, it wasn’t enough to overcome another strong performance by coach Matt Olds’ team. The Blazers walked away with a season sweep of the Elks after their 58-51 road victory on a rare Wednesday night matchup.
Like their first match of the season, Kalkaska jumped out to a big first half lead by holding Elk Rapids to just 13 points in quarters one and two, while putting up 27. Jacob Schaub scored 13 of his game high 19 points in the first half, while Hunter Dennis crashed the boards and kept second chance points to a minimum. The Blazers extended their halftime lead to 17 points at the end of the third, before the Elks’ last gasp effort fell short.
As a team, 8 Blazers scored as the team shot 54% from inside the arc, while holding the Elks to just 39% shooting. Blaine Barkovich continued his offensive output with 15 points, and Travis Blasko chipped in with 10 more. Logan Kniss and Jake Sutton both came off the bench and delivered some strong minutes as the Blazers held on for the victory.
At 15-1, the Blazers have one more chance to add to the win column. Thursday night they are back on the road to finish the season with East Jordan.
