Blazers News · Cross County update as Blazer Runners prepare to Race!

High school cross country practices began last week on Wednesday, August 12. If you’ve not attended yet and would like to join the team for the 2020 season contact Coach Brown at dbrown@kpschools.com or by visiting Kalkaska Cross Country on Facebook.  You can also join the Kalkaska Cross Country Remind group by texting the message @kalcc to the number 81010 and send a message.

We will have practices this week as follows:

Tuesday, August 18 from 3:30-5 pm. We will meet at the middle school gym lobby entrance. There will be a parent meeting at 5 pm.

Wednesday, August 19 from 3:30-5 pm at KMS

Thursday, August 20 from 3:30-5 pm at Log Lake Campground. Please bring a towel as we will plan on getting in the lake.

Friday, August 21 from 8:30-10 am at Log Lake Campground. Please bring a towel.

The Saturday, August 22 meet in Central Lake, the Ryan Shay Memorial, has been canceled.

The Saturday, August 29 meet in Benzie, The Pete Moss Invitational, is still being held, but it is going to be broken up over two days to accommodate all of the teams that would like to attend and still follow guidelines for race sizes. Kalkaska will be attending the races held on Saturday, August 29. Entries for this meet will be limited to 10 boys and 10 girls from each team due to high interest in the event. There can only be up to 70 runners in a single race. We need to arrive at noon and warm up. Boys run first this year at 12:30 pm, and the girls will run at 1 pm. Then we are out after a quick cool down and other groups replace ours. Maybe we could shoot over to Frankfort for a swim in Lake Michigan afterwards.

The rest of the schedule for the season is being scuffled around due to current events, but there will be an updated draft available by the parent meeting on Tuesday, August 18 at 5 pm.

When you come to practice please bring your water bottle, hand sanitizer, and arrive in a mask and social distance. Once practice is underway you do not need to run in the mask.

In order to practice, if you do not have a blue card yet, you will need $40 pay to play. You will also need a physical on file from on or after April 15, 2019. That physical is good for the 2020-21 school year, however, you will need to fill out an MHSAA Physical Requirement Questionnaire which can be found by visiting the Kalkaska Public Schools website, clicking the Menu. When viewing the menu click Forms. Once you’ve done that, click District Forms, and you should be able to access the MHSAA Physical Requirement Questionnaire. Print it off, fill it out (it will require signatures of student athletes and parents) and turn it in. If you do not have a 2019-20 physical you will need one dated on or after April 15, 2020, which would be good for the 2020-21 sports seasons.

Cross country is a great sport to challenge your physical and metal limits. We welcome all ability levels and love to see improvement. Middle school cross country practices are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 26. We are also once again attempting to allow running opportunities for elementary students and more information on that will be coming soon.
